My screenname’s right there. I chose it because more and more I feel like the Internet overall is harming us in a variety of ways and I think I was happier without it. And yet here I am.
Anyway, first anime was probably The Running Man segment from Neo Tokyo back when it was in Liquid Television on MTV, in my tweens, though I didn’t have a concept of anime back then. I think I also first saw Akira back then. First anime I knew as anime was Gundam Wing, which wasn’t until I was 19 or 20.
Favorite anime series include Scrapped Princess, Wolf’s Rain, Last Exile, Kino’s Journey, FMA (2003 may have been my favorite year for anime), Paranoia Agent, Fantastic Children, Noein, Ghost Stories (dub of course), and og FLCL. Chainsaw Man is the latest I’ve really enjoyed.
Favorite anime movies include Jin-roh: The Wolf Brigade, Children Who Chase Lost Voices, Memories, RSF Wings of Honneamise, Perfect Blue, and the obvious usuals like GITS, Akira, & Ghibli films. Think the latest I really dug were Patema Inverted and Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms.
Favorite manga include Nausicaä, Battle Angel Alita, Claymore, and Gantz. Really love what I’ve read of Berserk and Vagabond but hard to fave without an ending.
Despite some faves that are technically shounen I tend to dislike it (y’know, the hundreds of episodes, poor worldbuilding, loud main character, endless tournaments and training arc kind). Mostly prefer seinen. Lots of love for late 80s/early 90s OVAs, even some of the bad ones. Kind of avoid calling myself an anime fan because of common tropes and cultural trends I hate, but there’s a lot of anime I love. Love it as a medium, but not as a genre, I guess.
Used to work for an anime con, back before you could just stream most of it. I weirdly kinda miss the days of having to go to cons to see more than the smattering of anime in the local video store or the few on tv, staying up for 3 days straight, wondering if the anime I was watching was really so batshit crazy or if it was just my sleep deprivation, looking for confirmation from the one other person in the room who wasn’t sleeping only to realize they were in the same boat.
And as you can see, I talk too much. Aren’tcha glad I don’t post here more often?
