I always admired The Duke.

He was a real American. He worked hard as hell. Football at USC, made movies on horseback, doing many of his own stunts, cut a life out of raw California. Didn't go to war or the military, but made up for it later. A lot like the Orange One. And JW made pretty good movies that made a lot of money, to this day.

Yes. He repeatedly tried to enlist but he didn't know that the studio owning his contract made sure that the Military would reject him for service.
