The SDS and Weather Underground tried to foment violent revolution in the 1960’s. That failed miserably. A faction split off with the goal of working within the political system to implement communism. They went into the Democrat party, because there was zero chance of winning an election as a communist.
Eventually they grew in numbers and called themselves Progressives. They may call themself a a Dem or Progressive, but they preach communism.
Not many Dems are old school Dems.
