Kitten is like an affectionate nickname for a partner like Sweetheart. Animals used as terms of endearment is something done in multiple languages. Little mouse, my dove, and bunny are German examples for someone’s girlfriend and there is lion for a boyfriend. And in Italian, there is also little mouse as well as little puppy, little duck, and little sparrow as terms of endearment for a partner. You might also hear someone in Italian refer to a young kid as little shrimp or flea. Lol. :)
