I looked up if gifs can have sound and they can't.

Not necessarily, a traditional gif is only a series of images...but you can incorporate audio for an mp4 format.

My original source gifs have audio but I don't pay for premium or will I ever.

No they can on img flip they are just hard pay walled along with a lot of the gif editing features.
