"π = 5"

Well, my old math books always had me substitute π with 3.14 and that worked well enough. Using something else would be as effective in getting the message across. It's simply a broader estimate. Presumably it rounded to the nearest multiple of 5 but that's just speculation.

True, but 5 is simply a less accurate estimate. It would be easier to work with, and would still teach the formula for the area of a circle.

i've seen pi approximated as just 3, which i'd say just >barely< cuts it in terms of accuracy but it's really iffy
