I am saying that not all that long ago, the word "gender" was applicable to language / grammar. If you've learned a foreign language (I'm no expert, but I think it's the romance languages; Italian, Spanish, French, etc.) then this concept is quite familiar. Words (nouns) were either male or female, that was their gender. When I was a kid, the memory trick I used two keep straight the difference between gender and sex was; words have gender and people have sex. I was just a kid! 🤣

So, the word "gender" has been redefined and the reason is obvious; for political purposes. Since there are, by definition only two sexes, it would have been much harder to redefine the word sex for political purposes. But gender was always less commonly understood and since its meaning was at least tangentially related to to the two sexes, it was an easy target for redefinition. If you look up the definition of the word gender now, the language / grammar definition is always secondary, but at least it's still there (for now.) So the word has been re-defined for human purposes to apply to a human construct.

A better example of words being redefined for political purposes is how we're now (practically) being coerced to use the word migrant for illegal immigrants, or immigrants of any kind. Conflating illegal immigrant and legal immigrant into the word migrant is a most impressive example of this insidious practice.

Look up the definition of the word immigrant and compare it to migrant. Then look up the word migrate, which is the source for the word migrant. Migrate is still hanging in there, barely, with enough of its old definition still in place to make it very obvious what has happened.
