How I think he died is he was a hot by a Hunter in the head when he was hiding a body(that’s what the x on his forehead is) and he wasn’t dead immediately and tried to get away and before he could die of blood loss or something else the Hunter thinking he’d shot a deer sicced his dog on alastor leaving the almost dead radio host to be mauled to death by dogs

And that would be the cause for alastor's severe fear of dogs.

I think he isn’t afraid (or he just doesn’t show it) and he is more in the direction of hating dogs

He doesn't show it. In hell because they are hellhounds. But living dogs he is afraid of.

I don’t think we ever see him come into contact with a hellhound but I think he act like he is conversing with Lucifer or vox
