As a Native Person, I don't normally use
SpongeBob SquarePants templates. This show is offensive to Pacific Islanders. It takes place at "Bikini Bottom," that is the ocean floor underneath Bikini Atoll. From 1946-58 the residents
of the island were convinced to leave their homes so
that the United States could use it as a nuclear test site. They were assured that the US government
would provide for their needs while they were exiled & that they could return home after the testing was over. Neither of these things turned out to be true. The former Bikini Islanders are
trapped in a cycle of poverty with little help; the atoll is too radioactive for habitation. A TV show
imagining that the human inhabitants have been replaced
by wacky mutated creatures adds insult to injury.
