When I was 16, I was at a boy scout camp. It was a camp known as High Adventure, which is basically a week long summer camp but turn up the difficulty and remove the fun. This particular High Adventure was a week long canoe trip, where I nearly died from 1. Food poisoning, some water got into our vacuum sealed food and made it inedible, but I tried to eat it anyways, 2. Heat stroke, I was a dumbass and didn’t hydrate enough and it was f**king hot some days, 3. Hypothermia, it rained a lot and the wind was blowing hard, so hard that in the afternoon combined with the rain, it was cold enough to get hypothermia if you weren’t prepared. My ass was not prepared, 4. Drowning, my life saver was broken and I didn’t notice until halfway through when we capsized and I had to frantically swim up, something difficult because I had a map and massive water bottle attached to my leg, 5. Mosquitoes, those damn blood suckers were everywhere at one of our campsites, 6. Falling and hitting my head on some rocks, they were wet and slick and if I hit my head at the right angle I full well could have died, I probably still have brain damage, and 7. A f**king canoe falling on me. I was carrying the canoe on my back through a mile long portage, which is a trail across a body of land you can’t canoe by so you have to pick your shit up and carry it across, and I was stuck on boat duty. The tip of the canoe got caught on a tree 20 feet away from the end and fell on my back.
All in all could have been worse.
