Maui is a sort of roguish Demigod in Polynesian belief. On the one hand, he helped the Gods to raise the vault of heaven & to order the courses the stars within; on the other hand he caught the sun in his net & stole fire in order to give it to mortals. He invented the fish trap & cat's cradle, made days longer, & once fished an island up from the ocean floor--which is hard to do. Hina (the lady of the moon) is either his mother or his wife; they've been seen together but humans don't know the exact nature of their relationship.
