The ironic part about it is, in the show, the world government forbids study of the past, imposed by their own system of "absolute justice" where they're willing to completely wipe an entire nation off the map for knowing things they weren't supposed to.
Their corrupt regime's law enforcement force, the Marines, will often commit acts far worse than those of the "evil" they set out to destroy, believing the ends justify the means.
