Oh I'll get a mercenary hated pretty well. Firstly, it'll be attacking civilians, then favored characters. Maybe try to get the mercenaries allied with the Inkperials, and when the Inkperials fall, the merc will take power, and then he'll die a very well earned brutal death.

Tip: for a character you want hated you should have him attack innocent children or pets
