The problem with (unconscious?) bigotry among some ND folk

The problem with (unconscious?) bigotry among some ND folk | Neurodiverse people, particularly straight
white males, need to LISTEN when people; who are NOT straight/white/male say
they’re being homophobic/racist/sexist! Hey, I KNOW what homophobia/racism/sexism is – I don’t say ANY of the offensive words! So DON’T call me homophobic/racist/sexist! NO, there are more
LEVELS & NUANCES than that, and
straight/white/male people usually ONLY HAVE; a SURFACE AWARENESS of these issues
‘cos they’ve NEVER had to face this stuff. This is called “PRIVILEGE”; PLUS, we ND people tend to HOLD ONTO ingrained ideas and don’t like the REJECTION feel of being CORRECTED. So we often retain “UNCONSCIOUS BIASES” from
our upbringing and get upset if it's called out; I am NOT PRIVILEGED! I am neurodivergent, I’ve had to deal with TRAUMA and
DISCRIMINATION my whole life! Maybe, but if you're straight/white/male then OTHER neurodivergent people who AREN'T; have had to deal with MORE trauma and discrimination – this is “INTERSECTIONALITY”, look it up. Look, just imagine how you would feel
if you told a NEUROTYPICAL person they
were being ABLEIST and they DISAGREED, even though YOU have first-hand experience with it and THEY do NOT? THAT is how it feels when you accidentally say
homophobic/racist/sexist stuff to someone; who is not straight/white/male, and then REFUSE to be educated.
Dammit, we can ALL learn and do better. audhdad | image tagged in memes, adhd, neurodivergent, racism, misogyny, homophobia | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
