i usually beat the sonic cd final boss with 1 or 2 rings

As someone who beaten the game I can confirm that it was so hard I had to crank it down to normal difficulty

I killed myself in the game over and over again because I was having trouble with the trial, and the game made the difficulty easier.

I did it on Easy. But yeah, I'm pretty sure the tactic will work. There's a really small area of water where, if you walk in, the oxygen meter pops up. Stay there until Sonic dies, and repeat this until your ring count increases.
