I think you're significantly underrating the Statesman skills of Vladimir Putin. Say what you want to about, his fairly conservative politics - but he is tremendously popular in Russia - in spite of Billions invested in "Regime Change" efforts and "Civil Society" spy fronts like Navalny's, by the US and UK. Even Western Polling groups return 70%+ favorability numbers, amongst the Russian people. Trudeau, and Biden and Sunak, would be lucky to hit numbers like those - if theirs were added together.
Vladimir Putin is a popular politician, in part, because he's rightly seen as standing up for his country, in the face of NATO Empire aggression. By contrast, Zelensky is a creation OF the Empire, and is deeply unpopular with his own people - hence, elections have been cancelled, in Ukraine's 'bastion of Democracy'.
