I think the reason diversity is needed in media is that it's making entertainment equally enjoyable for everyone. Pardon the alliteration.

It gives underrepresented groups a chance to see themselves and motivates them to do something out of bounds, tear down barriers, and become role models themselves.

I don't support it to the point where the movie becomes a lecture, the protagonists are fat and unrealistically overpowered, and all the male characters are weak and have to learn from them, but these so-called "token characters" do have to potential to make entertainment better.

Companies still look for skill. Even if I was from a marginalized group, I would still need as much skills or more as those who aren't.

If someone less skilled than me gets the job and they happen to be marginalized, I'd be happy for them, not jealous. I just need to work harder.

if i was from a minority, i wouldn't NEED as much skill if i got hired for being from that minority.

yes, but that doesn't mean exploitation isn't bad/unfair.

To answer your questions:

1. The company needs to stay afloat, that's why they need the most skilled workers. Nowadays, a good portion of the top picks are coming from marginalized groups due to improvements in the equality of education. But companies aren't trying to reduce their requirements for marginalized groups. The top cream of professionals is diversifying even as skill requirements are increasing.

2. I'm pretty sure if we could see an alternate version of our planet where the marginalized groups here are the most privileged groups there, and vice versa, we would still say it's unfair. Social equality and inclusion is key.
