p + n = 31 coins
p = 31 - n
0.01p+0.05n= $0.87
0.01(31 - n) + 0.05n = 0.87
0.31 - 0.04n = 0.87
0.04n = 0.56
n = 14
p = 31 - 14
p = 17

there’s 14 nickels and 17 pennies
14+17=31 coins total
14 nickels=14 x 5 = 70
87-70 = 17
17 pennies = 17 x 1
