Nope, they shed their scales. Armadillos are an endangered species often killed for their scales that are used in traditional medicines, mojang doesn't want to promote that.

I'm sad that penguins lost, but I also wanted wolf armor. I'm still happy with the outcome. Also Vu mentioned how the frog lost a mob vote but still got added, so penguins might still get added in a later update
