My aunts Cathy and Elaine have a black cat. They usually keep him inside for multiple reasons (he'll go into their garden in the back yard and chill but he's mainly an indoor cat) but I'm fairly certain this is one of the reasons.

That's true, and very sad. Crazy people who think they're bad omens will intentionally kill black cats, and you need to make sure that doesn't happen
