We actually played this prank to a fellow employee years ago. First, when he started bragging about his cracker-box of an econo-car, one of us would run out to the parking lot during the work day and add some gasoline to his tank. His chest became more puffed out each day as he bragged more and more. We had him up to about 50 mpg,and that was in the 1980's, then each day one of us would siphon a bit of gas out of his tank. He stopped bragging for some unknown reason when his MPG dropped to about half of what was advertised on the new car sticker.
