Maybe I’m just spoiled from games like Dead Space and Portal 2 where you had a silent protagonist. And actually played the game.

As the player, we simply get to hear the character's inner monologue since we ARE that character and would be aware of our thoughts.

Sure, but that was the point of a silent protagonist. You’re the character, so you make the thoughts as the game plays around you.
