You don't need a character to be a furry. I spent over 6 years before I got an official fursona, so no worries!
Also I will say this isn't the best place to discover the fandom, as this site and this stream are both kinda biased and drama heavy and not at all reflective of the wider world or of furries both in and out of the fandom, so I would say ignore any of the drama (don't pay it any mind at all, trust me) and take a lot of slice-of-life content with a grain of salt.
