I try to use as little smear frames as possible and try to draw the lines as straight as my hand lets me. If you use smear frames tho, you need to know which parts on the body are going to be moving exactly. For example: a run cycle. You dont put a smear on the head or something- you put the smear on the feet and a bit of thickness on the legs to make it look like motion or blurr.
You also want to try not to copy-paste too many things or else it looks like w robot movement. Idk if this makes sense but its all my brain can squeeze out at the moment 👍

for me I use smear frames and stretching/squishing some parts of a character, as well try to space out the movements to sell the illusion

but I literally learned animation from watching yt vids so there might be a better way to do this
