There are 220 "Media Markets," in the US. These are geographic areas in which local media cover subjects of interest to people sharing economic, political, social and other related interests. There are about 1,200 local TV stations and a similar number of local newspapers. Over 15,500 local radio stations micro-market in the US.
News editors at these thousands of outlets feel pressured to present interesting stories that might attract more readers, listeners or watchers. Most editors use the "for attribution" and "two reputable sources" standards for local stories. Almost all of them subscribe to AP or similar services for information on regional and national stories. Readers, listeners and viewers rely on these outlets for truthful information. Any editor who transmits untruthful stories will be "outed," by his competitors and will likely be unemployed soon after. That is how News Industry Capitalism works in America, from the bottom up.
