I think the worst excuse in the world for doing something bad, is that you think someone else did something bad and got away with it. I can see this precedent playing out in court:

Judge: "Mr. Horse Rider you are accused of driving while drunk. How do you plead?"

Horse Rider: "Someone said that they knew someone else who saw Pedestrian snort coke."

Judge: "I had no idea! Case dismissed! I'm sorry we bothered you Mr. Horse Rider."
