Cats are better than dogs

dogs are better especialy when you live in a sketchy area
they are loud and if trained right will bark when they see someone they dont recognize
so if you have an intruder or someone outside your house the dog will bark and it will alert you
dogs can also sense when bad weather is coming and can be trained to sniff out people under crushed building

Cats would probably be better for catching pests if the area is also dirty.
Both would be good if there are criminals, rats and flies in the area.
