The soviet union often sent people out on to the front lines with NO GUNS, with the expectation that you can just go and collect one from someone who died
Also 3x that amount died in the Gulags.

The soviet union didn't see its citizens as people, thats why it didn't matter to them.

I see it as patriotism. All of them did something to help the war effort. Even if they died, they may have caused a distraction or made the Nazis waste ammunition.
