haha, best one ever was that Jimmy Carter signed legislation authorizing that we should switch to the metric system in the 1970s. But when it came time for states to change highways signs (as it was left for them to do it), governors refused. The public in general also was resistant, so while we might see grams and liters with food alongside ounces and quarts, we still stuck to the traditional British Imperial System because that's how things should be.
Metric does make more sense because it divides into 10s and 100s, etc, but so what, even immigrants soon adjust and our way is better because we like it that way.
