Corporate would rather let $500 worth of merchandise be stolen than pay for what would be the inevitable lawsuit filed by the employee's family after he gets shot or run over by the criminals.
The employees are in a no-win situation. Any bonus they ever get from the company is directly tied to the profitability of the store. So when merchandise is stolen, the potential bonus pool shrinks accordingly.
And when losses become unsustainable, Corporate closes the store.
Employees are screwed every way you look at this.
Thieves suck.
