DC and State are both safer than the 14 states in brown (I can't believe I forgot Alaska!), but nowhere in the US is safe in terms of gun deaths if you compare it to anywhere in the developed world. Most European countries have a rate of less than 2 gun deaths per 100,000; East Asian rates of gun deaths (as per this graph) make that look high.
I live in the US, and I didn't realize that I'd been living in a low simmer of fear until I traveled to another country and realized how much safer I felt being out on the street.
