It's likely smoke, If your mainly in areas like texas or arizona, then your going to be dealing with smoke from canada, 'rado experienced it and it happened while I was on a trip in texas. Otherwise it's the sunset.
I think it's a wildfire. I live in long beach California and a long time ago the sky and sun turned red, it was also raining ash that looked like dandruff. Looked something like this.
