I public furries aren't as bad outside of convention areas, though seeing them at non-convention events, whether it's comic con and gaming events, or even sometimes in malls or stores does get really annoying. It's like they have official times and places but invade everyone else's, but act like you're committing a hate crime if you have a problem with it.
My first experiences with furries weren't that bad, but when I got more incorporated into the fandom... I saw things that they don't want the public to see. Mostt furries aren't bad at all, actually really cool and normal people with a hobby. Just stay away from the fandom, that's where a lot of the stereotypes, politics and cringe come from.
