Rather than deter crime, highly publicized execution may actually provoke killings that never would have occurred, according to researchers William Bowers and Glenn Pierce of Northeastern University's Center for Applied Social Research. They noted that in New York State between 1907 and 1963 there were two additional homicides, on the average, in the month after an execution.
