My late-Brother Jim was a graduate of the Defense Language Institute's last Chinese Language, History and Culture classes at Yale in the early 1960's, when he was about the same age as the suspect. Jim was also Air Force. The Air Force culture was high tech, which made them dove-tail well with the equally high tech National Security Agency for electronic intercept and analysis of information on our adversaries. It appears that this relationship has not changed over the decades.
What appears to be different is the "group think" of young patriots. Daniel Ellsberg was labeled by Conservative Republicans as "unpatriotic," for leaking "The Pentagon Papers," a Top Secret retrospective review of events related to the Vietnam conflict. By the time Edward Snowden did his politically motivated leaks, "Conservative" Republicans could no longer be counted on to put their country ahead of political considerations. With the MAGA movement, politics always comes first. MAGA affiliation or sympathies should disqualify one for Top Secret Clearance, like SDS association would when my Brother served.
