The problem is that the term "Assault Weapon" is a fluid and made-up term. What is meant by it, is apparently - weapons comparable to those carried in every Police car. And in fact that alone is an inversion of the idea of the rights embodied and protected in the Constitution - but which actually predate it. One need only look at the movie Braveheart - and one can see the dangers of defenseless population, ruled over by armed tyrants.
You say that could never happen? Well it was happening in Mariupol and the Donbas, from 2014 to 2022.
And in fact, many gun control advocates openly state their eventual goal - which actually is disarmament. Registration within a STATE, under the commercial law, makes things property OF the STATE. Which is why you get not THE TITLE to a registered "motor vehicle" - but rather a "Certificate OF Title" - meaning you have a security interest and possession - but the STATE can sell it auction if they like - and take whatever is offered, whether you agree to the price or not. Similarly, gun registration schemes have been used to legalize and facilitate confiscation efforts - in places like England and Australia. And both countries went on Totalitarian extremes under the guise of Covid emergency powers. Australia has "quarantine camps" where people with no signs of Covid were sent as a punishment l, for resistance to the tyrrany.
