The majority of people are somewhere in the middle, but there are some people very far to the left or very far to the right. And the people very far to one side or the other tend to have more extreme views and are more likely to engage in acts of violence.

Acts of violence by people on the far left didn't happen very much until the 1960s. Violence by people on the far right goes back much further.
