I love it. Probably right for the wrong reason. Don't disagree in either case.
Possible counter-arguments include "we're supposed to love our neighbor as we love ourself, so to love our neighbor we must first love ourself". I don't know, I tried giving my neighbor a hand job and now I'm not allowed within 100' of his property. Awkward! (And I'd always wanted a handy from him, so by the golden rule I did exactly what I was supposed to!)
Another possible counter-argument (which falls flat on its face) is that people have spent too much energy loving others at such great personal expense that they need to focus on themselves to get things back into balance. If I live long enough to see this problem, I can die happy.
Last thing that comes to mind off the cuff is that we're conceding our irredeemably selfish nature and punting on the whole "other people matter" sentiment. F**k other people, greed is good and selfishness is the law of the land (in other words, the prevailing ideology 40 years ago). That theory at least holds water. Now pardon me while I go drown myself in it.
