If it makes you feel any better, I once did a work-study in college and volunteered to help take care of the new fish in the biology lab (one of the class pets) while the lab tech went on vacation for a week.
The fish arrived the day after he left and I had to introduce them to the tank, following all care instructions. Within a week, 14 fish died because I couldn't get the nitrate levels balanced out in the new fish tank.
