#1: Ukraine is just the latest theater of Russia’s post-USSR neo-imperialism. You can always count me as an opponent of it whether it’s in Georgia or Ukraine or within its own borders: the Chechen War, the ongoing repression of Tatars and other ethnic minorities, etc.
#2: No love for the PRC and its own 1984-style thought-policing married with its own abrasive neocolonialism. Meanwhile, Taiwanese society and democracy have made great progress since the dark post-Chinese Civil War days of Chiang Kai-Shek. Easy one.
#3: USA + allies did some shady shit around the world, but the USSR was worse. Both sides won this one in a way, since it didn’t end in nuclear Holocaust. Good job, everyone. *clap*
#4: The DPRK was the clear aggressor in this war, though Kim regime propaganda says otherwise of course. The South’s pro-democracy political evolution has since proven the terrible price of this war was worth it.
#5: A terrible war that shouldn’t have been fought, but I can’t bring myself to side with commies, so neutral.
#6: I’m anti-colonialist by default, though the Zimbabwean victors of this war made such a basket case of their own country (and pursued racial retaliation of their own) so I have to go neutral.
#7: The Portuguese cringily (and bloodily) tried to hang onto their overseas empire long after the rest of Europe decolonized. Their argument was their overseas territories were “actually Portuguese.” That claim was made laughable by their discrimination against non-whites, not giving them full benefits of citizenship, and the widely unequal living standards of natives.
#8: Northern Ireland is arguably a colonial holding but the methods the IRA pursued can’t be admired either. Neutral.
#9: A hopelessly fraught and seemingly never-ending conflict. Palestinian leadership is abysmal, but the ball is in Israel’s court to propose a genuine peace, deal since it obviously holds much more power.
#10: Hindu vs. Muslim chauvinism on both sides. Gandhi is rolling over in his grave. Neutral.
#11: Allies. Easy one.
#12: Japanese expansionism was every bit as inhumane & atrocious as Nazism. Allies again.
#13: I’m on Team Republican, with Orwell and Hemingway.
#14: Czarists vs. Commies. A bloodbath on both sides. Neutral.
#15: An utterly pointless war that sullied all participants, even the U.S., which became nearly a police state under Wilson.
#16: Hmmm yeah that’s a real hard one. I’ll go with Team Lincoln/U.S. Grant and not with the Bible-thumping slavers.
