I lived and worked in the district next to McCarthy's. My district was the most solidly Republican district in California, at that time. All of the local politicians were publicly anti0government, especially government medical services. Yet they supported the large Mental Health Clinic for children ai worked for and another one that specialized in caring for sexually abused children. Both clinics got some community donations, but we depended on federal grants and reimbursements for services for 99% of our budget. We sold the right-wing community leaders on the fact that caring for troubled and abused children was good for "property values." The leaders who didn't come to our fund raisers, at least did not oppose our efforts.
I went to a Denny's when I was passing through Bakersfield (McCarthy's district) a few weeks ago. Nothing has changed. The staff was mostly Mexican-American. The customers were about one third Mexican-American. Nobody smiled and people from one ethnic group barely acknowledged people of the other one. The staf were 100% polite, yet not the least bit pleasant. Nothing has changed.
