February 1st or 2nd has been known as Imbolc, Brigid, Candlemas, Woodchuck Day & Groundhog Day. The sacred day of the Goddess Brigantia aka Bríde or Brighid. It's the traditional New Year's Day in Scotland. A time of new beginnings, halfway (6 weeks) between the Winter Solstice & the Spring Equinox. The meaning of groundhogs predicting weather is not hard to imagine. Animals living in nature learn to sense atmospheric changes to survive. So if you notice that those which live
underground have started foraging on the surface,
it indicates that the weather will be warmer soon.
