("Californios" were the Mexican inhabitants prior to statehood.)

The time window for even that (when it would actually have meant something) ran out a century ago. At least one of the Indiah tribes is no longer around to receive them anyway. Also, the grizzly bear on the state flag was extirpated by the 20th century.
