If the documents were returned the next day, before you even heard about it, then yeah, where's the crime!!

that's like telling a police officer who pulls you over for speeding and saying "Well, I slowed back down, so there's no violation or crime".

No, it's like telling your friend that you paid your ticket the next day. The reason your friend went to jail and you didn't is because he ignored years of tickets and court instructions to get it sorted.
