Reasons why Trump should not be House Speaker:
—The biggest kibosh on this political fantasy football play is that Trump himself wouldn’t accept it. Although House Speaker is one of the most powerful positions in American government, as well as third in line to be President, it’s likely Trump would still view it as a demotion. He’s running for President, remember! This whole “governing” business would be nothing but a distraction from campaigning (and defending himself from litigation). Plus, he’d have to show up and work a day-job. In Washington, D.C. When he could be at Mar-a-Lago playing golf every day and pumping out “Truths” for his online fans. Yuck. No thanks.
—Trump sent a mob of his supporters marching down Pennsylvania Ave. toward the U.S. Capitol, a mob who ultimately breached Congress’s walls for the first time since the War of 1812. Can American government survive the irony of placing the same man in charge of the damn place a mere 2 years after those events? I mean, Republicans could shrug it off, but could America?
—Dovetailing off of that thought: Trump was defeated in the 2020 elections. (Yes, I’m aware that fact is “contested,” lol, but nevertheless.) Voters sent him packing from Washington. Further, the underperformance of Trump-backed candidates in key races of the 2022 midterms is viewed as a re-rejection of Trump. Trump coming back to Washington as one of the head guys in charge after the last 2 elections could be seen as undermining the “will of the voters” (quaint concept, but hey).
—It can be argued the main reason the current House Republican majority is so narrow (and McCarthy failed to win his Speaker election as anticipated) is the drag of its ongoing association with Trump. So it would be add another layer of irony for Trump to actually be rewarded for that. But hey, politics is full of ironic outcomes. Not disqualifying, but it would be funny, and an enormous weight around Republicans’ necks going into 2024.
