You could tell a simplistic doom-and-gloom story focused only on the plot leading up to Jan. 6 and the day itself (bad!), or take note of the obvious fact the plot failed, and other Jan. 6-related storylines imposing a measure of accountability on the participants and sympathizers (good!).

As for me, I like the big, messy, contradictory picture — as big and messy and contradictory as America itself.

Nooooo, I know you're smarter than this. I know that you know that Jan 6th was a big exiting nothingburger. A bunch of middle aged conspiracy theorists larping in tactical gear, smashing windows and yelling at lawmakers was not a big deal. At no point in that riot was 'democracy' in danger; as in at all. All that transpired that day was that 100,000 Trump supporters enraged at their concerns not being properly addressed gathered a crowd of around 2,000 mentally ill people egged on by FBI agents sent to agitate the situation broke past police lines and made a mess inside a government building.

The only thing that's an embarrassing mess is the fact that heavily equipped and trained officer's of the Capital city of the most powerful nation on earth were unable to fend off said rabble and made the US look weaker than wet paper in front of the whole world. It is really that simple, the only thing that's 'messy' is AOC's diapers from the day even though she was no where near where the riot happened.

Agree the Jan. 6 insurrection was tawdry, half-baked, and doomed - like most Trump affairs - yet it still disrupted the U.S. tradition of the peaceful transition of power and caused a flesh wound to our democracy.

First you have the Beer Hall Putsch ("tawdry, half-baked, doomed"), then you have the Reichstag Fire, then you have Kristallnacht, then before you know it you're at war with half the world and they're loading up the trains to the camps.

I think you're exaggerating a wee bit. It was less of a cut and more of a mild bruise. The electoral process was stalled for what only a few hours? 6 at best? I think you're republic is fine.
