Agree the Jan. 6 insurrection was tawdry, half-baked, and doomed - like most Trump affairs - yet it still disrupted the U.S. tradition of the peaceful transition of power and caused a flesh wound to our democracy.

I don't think democracy dies all at once but rather by a thousand cuts.
First you have the Beer Hall Putsch ("tawdry, half-baked, doomed"), then you have the Reichstag Fire, then you have Kristallnacht, then before you know it you're at war with half the world and they're loading up the trains to the camps.
