Final term as governor

In the late 1970s, Wallace announced that he was a born-again Christian and apologized to black civil rights leaders for his past actions as a segregationist. He said that while he had once sought power and glory, he realized he needed to seek love and forgiveness. In 1979, Wallace said of his stand in the schoolhouse door: "I was wrong. Those days are over, and they ought to be over." He publicly asked for forgiveness from black Americans.

During Wallace's final term as governor (1983–1987) he appointed a record number of black Americans to state positions, including, for the first time, two as members in the same cabinet.

tl;dr what an asshole

Amazing. You’ll defend the personification of segregation, but will go to the ends of the earth to vilify Donald Trump, a man who has done way more good for America than George Wallace certainly ever did.

Of course, Segregation Man Bad.

But George Wallace’s change of heart on race relations (and winning 90% of the black vote in his last race for Governor) complicates the picture of him as a whole politician.

Indeed, he was the face of segregation. Then he apologized: to black people directly, and for all of it.

I mean, this would be like Trump out and saying he was wrong to ever say “Build that Wall,” or like Obama coming out and saying we shouldn’t have Hope and Change; actually, we should embrace Despair and Continuity.
