a space shuttle (even with the extra fuel tank) would have nowhere near enough fuel, thrust, and delta v to move the earth so far as to significantly adjust its orbit to literally make it escape the sun's gravity
but hey, it's just a comic, i guess they just had infinite fuel on ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
