The Native peoples of North America have bestowed upon all of us a wealth of culture, agriculture, knowledge, language, and wisdom that can’t be replaced. If you’re looking for a specific example, look no further than corn: Cultivated by Native Americans over thousands of years from a barely-edible grasslike weed into a miraculous crop capable of sustaining nations and feeding the world. Despite all the injustices they’ve endured, they’ve never stopped giving, and they never will. This Thanksgiving, I’m saying thanks for Native wisdom, and thinking of how we work together to preserve our continent for everyone, for the next hundred generations to come.
