Sicknesses:
—White supremacy and persistent racism
—A gun culture that callously disregards victims of mass shootings and routine gun violence
—Rampant corporate profiteering
—Extreme wealth and income inequality
—Voter suppression and election denial
—Unwarranted science skepticism and quackery
—Warmongering and neo-conservatism
—Selfishness and greed
—Overall discounting of the lives of others
Things That Aren’t Sicknesses:
—Affirming that LGBTQ people can be who they are
—Affirming that disabled people have a place in American life
—Protecting reproductive freedom and women’s absolute right to terminate forcible, dangerous, or simply unwanted pregnancies
—Collective action by workers to secure their rights, incomes, and workplace safety
—Solidarity with Ukraine to resist Russian neo-imperialism
—Efforts at holding traitors accountable under the law
This Thanksgiving, I’m mindful of America’s pitfalls. But I’m thankful for the progressive American tradition that has kept our country moving forward for at least the past 120 years.
Every American sickness has a group of American doctors working tirelessly every day to cure it.
Which side are you on?
